Jen Pawol will become the first woman umpire to take to the field in an MLB game when the Miami Marlins take on the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series. Pawol, who is one of 17 umpires eligible to substitute in for MLB games, will join the umpire team at Truist Park in Atlanta for the first game on August 10. The 48-year-old began her professional umpire career in 2016 and became the first woman to reach the Triple-A level in 34 years in 2023. In the same year, Pawol umpired the Triple-A Championship before becoming the first woman since Ria Cortesio in 2007 to umpire a Spring Training game the following year. Pawol was promoted to Triple-A umpire crew chief in 2024 before working more Spring Training contests earlier this year. The New Jersey native, who is the seventh woman umpire in Minor League history, also umpired in the Big Ten Conference from 2013 to 2015. Pawol played softball at Hofstra University and at the Amateur Softball Association Major Fast Pitch level for a decade before becoming an umpire.
