EUGENE — Oregon’s offense got the better of its defensive counterparts during Tuesday’s full-padded practice.
The Ducks opened their second week of fall camp with explosive plays, particularly in the run game, and some disruptive defensive plays, according to coach Dan Lanning.
“We were on it today,” tight end Jamari Johnson said. “Everybody was just balling, everything just connected. At the end we had a little competition between the offense and the defense and the offense won, so we felt pretty good about that.”
Lanning said the offense fared well during Tuesday’s red zone and goal line periods.
“Offense got the upper hand in goal line, some explosive plays showing up,” Lanning said. “I haven’t seen a lot of those so far through fall camp. Saw some (Tuesday), which is a real positive. Defense doing a great job attacking the ball.”
The defensive line was called out by defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi for its effort in an early practice and has responded well since.
Lanning sees improvement in gap control and movement at the line of scrimmage, and cited cornerback Theran Johnson for also breaking up a ball in the air.
“We’re creating havoc for the quarterback, which is a real positive with those guys,” Lanning said. “When you really can become the separator is when things are equal, when they have a good call and you have a good call, and it’s a one-on-one matchup, who’s going to go win that matchup.
“All those things add up, timing, getting in a rhythm, they all matter when it comes to explosive plays.”
