Lower Columbia Area speaks up: Letters to the editor for the week of Feb. 21, 2025
- Updated
Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Daily News.
Blitzkrieg. I love that word: an awesome offensive designed to confuse where the real emphasis will be.
This is certainly true for the current efforts at the national level. My attitude is, rather than be overly agitated by current executive orders, to wait and see what actually survives legal and political challenges.

Councilman Keith Young’s comment that “... it’s not the government’s job to care for your teeth. That’s your job,” to the medical panelists at the recent council workshop, I find disingenuous and frankly, repugnant.
In fact, according to the Longview City Council Protocol handbook, section 2.1 states “Fundamentally, the powers of the City Council are to be utilized for the good of the community and its residents, to provide for the health, safety and general welfare of the citizenry.” So it kinda is your job.
Being a community leader is not about “your” rights. You have an obligation to look out for past, present and future generations in our community. That’s what our parents did 57 years ago when they decided to follow the science and fluoridate the water. That’s what our grandparents did 80 years ago when they accepted the polio vaccine, so that their children and grandchildren never need to know what an iron lung is.
To remove fluoride from the water would hurt the poorest and most vulnerable in our community. As a community, we look out for those who have no voice and for those in need. It’s what good neighbors do. It’s not about “me first.”

President Musk and Vice President Trump need to be stopped dead in their tracks as they further destroy our democratically elected republic.
Both President Musk and Vice President Trump are lawless in thought and deed.
The cult following who voted for the South African immigrant and the convicted felon believe that, now that Puerto Rican immigrants are incarcerated in Cuba, this will somehow open the job market so that their grandchildren will have jobs picking strawberries and lettuce, making that big money, and getting a tan to boot.
When President Musk and his small band of teenage minions closed down USAID, an agency started by President John F. Kennedy to help starving babies, children and elderly in third world nations eat, he saved about $60 million. From that action over the next four years it is estimated millions of people will die. That is being "pro-life" for sure. After all, the children who die won't be Americans so who cares anyway (as vice president's wife wrote on her jacket 'who cares anyway? Do you?').
It is great too that we will have the President going through Social Security disability citizens. Many older people (baby boomers) grew up in the '60s, noted for hippies, drugs, etc. Not the best of people for sure. I should know, I am one. Take their money President Musk. They are not producing anything and they had their time on earth. I'm just happy 61% of white Catholics voted for President Musk. Yeah!

Shame on President Trump and billionaire Elon Musk for illegally cutting funds to USAID. Only Congress has the fiscal responsibility to defund programs they enacted under our Constitution.
USAID showcases our mercy, justice and kindness (Micah 6:8) to millions of hungry children while supplying lifesaving medical care.
Shame on Republicans for allowing, even applauding Musk's access to yours and my tax records. How ironic that Trump refused to share his own tax returns.
USAID is only the beginning. What other programs will be cut? Education? Social Security? Medicare?
Shame on President Trump spending our tax dollars to attend the Super Bowl. He could show fiscal responsibility by cutting the bloated White House staff and reducing his numerous trips to Mar-a-Lago. Why should taxpayers support his extravagant lifestyle while he denies food to the hungry and aid to the poorest nations, harming our image in the world.
Shame on the rest of us for doing nothing to stop Trump and the Republicans from ignoring the Constitution and trampling on the rights of all people.
The Bible calls for us to help the oppressed, feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, show mercy, kindness and justice while walking humbly with our Lord.
