Lower Columbia Area speaks up: Letters to the editor for the week of Apr. 18, 2025
Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Daily News.
Most recognize that Custer’s Last Stand, also known as the battle of the Little Bighorn, was a desperate reaction to the brutal treatment of indigenous Americans and not the reason for the ultimate fate of Indians.
Similarly, the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on the Israel music festival can be viewed as a reaction to the ongoing attempted genocide of Palestinians that started in 1896 when Theodor Herzl went public with the Zionist movement.
Bombing of the King David hotel, British headquarters, and the massacre of the Palestinian village of Deir Yassin by Irgun and LEHI (also called the Stern Gang) were early terrorist acts by those wanting to establish Israel. The leaders of these terrorists’ organizations subsequently became prime ministers of Israel.
Memorials to Jimmy Carter mentioned his opinion that peace will only come when Palestinians are treated with human rights and accorded a state, a view supported by Peter Bienert, journalist and self-described practicing Jew.

Letters to the editor policy:
Letters should be original and no longer than 250 words. Letters must include the author’s name, street address or telephone number for verification. The newspaper does not share that information with third parties. Only the name and city of residence are published. One submission can print per month. All submissions are subject to editing for length, spelling, grammar and clarity. Send submissions to letters@tdn.com or The Daily News, PO Box 1666, Longview, WA 98632.
A shot at the American dream and getting a college education are still the goals for many in our community.
Please consider donating to The Daily News Students in Need Campaign, especially if you prefer to keep your donations in our community. Your entire donation will provide emergency grants to students so they can stay in school via the Student Success Fund.
Your donation will help bridge the financial gap for students, significantly increasing their odds of graduating. When they graduate, these students are more likely to build their careers in our community, benefitting us all.
Please donate to Students in Need by the end of June. It’s an investment in the future of our community!
Sincerely,
