Lower Columbia Area speaks up: Letters to the editor for the week of May. 9, 2025
- Updated
Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Daily News.
Trump is wrong about so many things.
Putin is not our friend; Ukraine, Canada and Mexico are not our enemies.
Jan. 6 rioters are not patriots, they are criminals.
USAID is not an evil organization. It supports our farmers and provides food for the poorest people in the world.
Voice of America cost us very little and provided a source of honest information.
Giving billionaires more money will not make life better for anyone.
Inclusion, equity and diversity make an organization stronger.
Migrants are just looking for a better life and they willingly do the jobs that most Americans are unwilling to do. Most aren’t criminals or animals.
Tariffs really are a tax on the American consumer.
Ruling by executive order is a sign of weakness. It means you can’t obtain your objective by getting a law passed.
Surrounding yourself with people who won’t tell you when you are wrong does not make you a better leader.
Just because someone disagrees with you does not make them a crazy animal.
You can criticize Israel without being an anti-Semite.
Woke is not evil. Jesus was woke. Being a Christian is more than just proclaiming you are one.
Trump did not win the last election by a landslide; he has no mandate.
Everyone in this country is entitled to due process. You cannot just proclaim someone is a criminal and then send them to a prison in a foreign country.
Trump is not above the law.
Trump is not the king.

Letters to the editor policy:
Letters should be original and no longer than 250 words. Letters must include the author’s name, street address or telephone number for verification. The newspaper does not share that information with third parties. Only the name and city of residence are published. One submission can print per month. All submissions are subject to editing for length, spelling, grammar and clarity. Send submissions to letters@tdn.com or The Daily News, PO Box 1666, Longview, WA 98632.
How much longer are they going to let Trump continue to break the law? Lock him up. He is nothing but a chump.
And who do we think we are, sticking our noses in everyone’s business?
And why are they talking about cutting Social Security? It doesn’t have anything to do with the exploding national debt.
Keep your greedy hands off my Social Security.

You might have read about The Daily News’ Students in Need campaign, which benefits LCC’s Student Success Program.
As an LCC Foundation board member, donating to this annual campaign makes a real difference in people’s lives in our community. It could be your neighbor, co-worker, or friend who needs a small grant to stay in school and complete their education, and that’s what the Student Success Program provides.
Here’s a note from Letavia, one of the students who was helped:
“I am incredibly grateful for this funding, which allows me to continue my education while balancing life as a single mother of two. As I complete the final quarter of the LPN-RN bridge program at Lower Columbia College, this support has been crucial in helping me reduce work hours to focus on clinical and preceptorship requirements. Facing a temporary financial hardship, this scholarship ensures I can achieve my academic goals and build a stable future for my family.”
If you donated last year, Letavia’s “thank you” is for you. If you haven’t donated yet, here’s your chance to make a difference! Why not donate today?

Many of the people crying about tariffs, saying they cause price increases, are the same people who are in favor of other things that also cause price increases.
Things like higher taxes on corporations, unions, minimum wage laws, child labor laws, environmental regulations, carbon taxes, 40-hour work weeks, safety regulations, and employee benefits like retirement programs, medical insurance and maternity leave.
I’m not saying these things are bad, it’s just that China and other countries do not have many of these things. That is why they can make cheaper products. In fact, we are losing more and more manufacturing jobs because we cannot compete with their lower prices.
If we want to have manufacturing jobs in the U.S., tariffs are one tool to ensure this, but I suspect the outcry is mostly just a dislike for Trump.
